The very best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September (Peru’s winter). This is the dry season in the Andes Mountains, therefore it’s the best time to see the most popular sites like Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Inca Trail. The best time to visit coastal Lima is the opposite, between December and April (Peru’s summer). During the summer months you can enjoy Lima’s warm sunshine and avoid the chilly mist and clouds of winter.

Visitors from many developed countries do not need a tourist visa to visit Peru. Peruvian Immigrations will mark your passport upon arrival to Peru with how many days you are permitted to stay, typically 90 days. Remember that your passport must be valid for more than six months after your departure date. To check if you require a visa, on the following link. Do I need a visa?

The primary language spoken throughout Peru is Spanish. Other official languages of Peru are the indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara, which you will hear more in rural areas. Peruvians in the tourism sector speak enough English to help you get by. Also use a translation app if you need to interact with the locals. It is helpful to learn some basic Spanish before your trip if possible.

Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination. Violent crime is no more common in Peru than any other tourist destination in the world. Of course, like anywhere, you should exercise caution to avoid petty crime like robbery by keeping your valuables secure and avoiding dark, non touristic places at night. Be aware of your surroundings, know your route and keep your personal items secure and you will be fine.

In Peru, the tap water is not safe to drink. For drinking water, stick to bottled water. Tap water boiled vigorously for a minute or more is also safe for hot beverages. Although if you have a sensitive stomach, maybe you should boil bottled water instead. The tap water is fine for brushing your teeth, just avoid swallowing it.

At Orange Nation we include all transfers in our private vehicles for your convenience. Peru has very well priced trasportation. Its affordable to take a private taxi to almost everywhere, even to the Sacred Valley. Easiest way is for your hotel to book your taxy and pre negotiate the price. However, there are tons of marked taxis that you can just hail for 10 soles or less. When traveling at night, we recommend getting a driving app like in-driver. The buses are not an organized transport system, so its best to stick to taxis or walking if you are exploring the city center.

Yes, and they are plentiful in the major cities. You can step into any BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental or others and use their ATM with a $3-$6 fee. The machines at these banks all have options in English. Banks usually have a 400 soles or 200 dollar limit withdraw limit. Ask your tour operator about any ATM´s that could increase this limit. Opt to use an ATM located inside a bank rather than on the street for higher security.

Absolutely! Lima is a very interesting metro area with many things to see. There is a historic central area, a beautiful coastline with 2+ miles of continuous parks, an artsy bohemian district and a world-renowned culinary scene. The neighborhoods of Miraflores, San Isidro or Barronco are safe with an eclectic scene, with a large expat community. Keep in mind that between the months of June and October the city is under constant cloud cover. But, the summer months are pleasant with plenty of sunny days.

Lima is perfectly located to go on any trip throughout Peru. The domestic flights are very well priced and for trips to places like Ica or Paracas, you can easily take a bus.

To get to Machu Picchu first you need to fly into Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport. From there, you need to take an hour and a half flight to Cusco. Trail and tours to Machu Picchu usually depart from Cusco or the Sacred Valley. You can take a train which can include a short hike if you you choose. The train leads to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu pueblo), where you can take a shuttle bus to the Citadel.

At times travelers opt for a multi-day trek to Machu Picchu like the Lares Trek or Salkantay Trek instead of train. The most popular way to see Machu Picchu is via the Inca Trail. The Inca trail sells out months in advance and you enter the Citadel from the Sun Gate.

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, occurs in 40-50 percent of people who live in low elevation areas traveling to an elevation of 10,000 feet or more. It occurs in 25 percent of people traveling to a destination of 8,000 feet or more. It is a temporary condition characterized by slight headache, shortness of breath when walking, fatigue, minor dizziness and loss of appetite. Symptoms develop between 6 to 24 hours of being at higher elevations, and last one to three days. It is typically mild and no need for alarm.

There are many ways to combat altitude sickness, like drinking lots of water, avoiding heavy and fatty foods, no smoking or drinking alcohol, eating whole grains and veggies and taking it slow the first couple days. Do not begin a challenging hike the first two days at high elevation, start your trek on day three the earliest.

10/10 Amazing experience

If you’re thinking about which agency to use, look no further- Ray and Jimmy went well above and beyond and made this a memorable, safe, fun, and professional experience.

Ray is the most knowledgeable guide I’ve ever had in any country for any excursion - during both the Short Inka Trail and the actual tour of Machu Picchu, Ray’s expertise shined through in his ability to give us a detailed background on every aspect of the history, climate, nature, flora, animals.. anything!

Likewise, Ray and Jimmy were truly the friendliest, kindest hosts that I could have imagined our group having.

Thank you both so much and I will definitely book with you again if (when) I come back!

Awesome experience!!

Did the 2 day Inca trail with Ray and Jimmy they were great and knowledgeable. Ray not only guided us along trail to Machu Picchu but also was an excellent photographer and taught us the history. It was a group of 10 and we had a great time. Even everything going on in Peru, we always felt in good hands.

Short Inca Trial (2-Day)

This tour was the perfect experience for our (group of 10) short trip to Peru. The trail was sometimes challenging, but the views and history made it all worth it. Ray and Jimmy were our guides and imparted sooo much knowledge about the history of Peru, Inca, and beyond. I would definitely recommend!

It was perfect! On the first day we had a great time exploring the Sacred Valley and see the main attractions and learn about the history of this beautiful place.

I would definitely recommend the short Inka trail, I think it was the best way to get to know Machu Picchu and the surrounding area. We arrived at Machu Picchu when most of the crowd was gone and it felt really special.

You won’t regret booking with this tour company, especially if Liz Montesinos is your guide. My boyfriend and I did the 4 day Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain (private) tour. The tour covered everything; from transportation, hotels, meals, tickets and entrance fees, to stops at local places we would’ve never known to go or check out. We did a private tour because for us we felt this would help us get the most out of our time and experience in Peru

Best mix of adventure, history and nature: Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

4-day trekking option seemed too intense for us, but we still wanted to experience the entrance to Machu Picchu through the ancient Inka trail, so we opted for Orange Nation’s combination of Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I couldn’t be more happy about our decision.

We booked and paid the deposit to Orange Nation / Sam travel for the 4 day Inca Trail and Machu Pichu trip back in 2019. But we couldn't travel in 2020 and 2021 - but the company honoured our agreement and so we came back in 2022.

My girl and i did the Machu Pichu trek tour with Orange Nation. It was seriously the most amazing experience that we'll never forget. Gorgeous views! The long trek was worth the amazing view. The tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. We considered other tours but chose Orange Nation because we liked the idea of smaller groups and this was definitely worth it. I will be using Orange Nation again next year when I come back to Peru!
