Inca Trail FAQ´s

What is the Inca Trail?

The Inca trail is a famous hiking trail in Cusco, Peru. It has many variations including the popular Classic Inca Trail and Short Inca Trail. The trail follows in the same footsteps the Incas took more than 600 years ago, enroute to the sacred Machu Picchu Citadel. Also known as ¨Camino Inka.¨

The trail begins in the small town of Ollantaytambo and terminates at Machu Picchu. You have the pleasure of trekking through various micro-climates in the Andes Mountain before arriving at your destination at the foot of the Amazon Jungle.

The only way to book the Inca Trail is to source a tour operator that´s been licensed and authorized by the Ministry of Culture of Peru. Once you have chosen a tour operator, you select your travel dates and check availability. Once availability is confirmed for the dates required, you pay your deposit, forward personal information and copy of passport to your tour operator. Finally, your tickets are booked and you receive a confirmation email.

There are many questions to ask yourself and factors to consider before settling on a tour operator. We recommend choosing a local tour operator because only they can be licensed to do the Inca Trail and are less likely to hand you over to third party. Click the following link for our blog on: Choosing the best tour operator.

Since 2002 everyone needs a guide and permit to hike this historical monument. The Peruvian government imposed a number of regulations and limitations on the number of people that can start the trek on any given day. They did this to ensure the continued preservation of this for future generations.

Permits for the Inca Trail can only be obtained through a licensed tour operator. You cannot obtain a permit directly from the Peruvian government. Tour operators will purchase permits on your behalf, and you must provide your passport information when booking.

This is fully dependent on the tour operator you choose. With Orange Nation you can look forward to a licensed, bilingual and knowledgeable guide for the entirety of the trek, including a guided tour inside the Citadel of Machu Picchu. We provide personal porters to carry your luggage up to 7Kg and to set up your campsites during the hike. Our chef and the assistant will prepare abundant, restaurant standard meals. Finally, we provide camping equipment of the highest standard and quality.
