Overview

Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire called Tawantinsuyu and is a living museum overflowing with our country’s history history and culture. . There are numerous archeological sites, Cathedrals, museums, and many shops to explore. Visit the most interesting sites in and around Cusco and the Sacred Valley with all of its ancient treasures and Inca ruins, plus a Tour of Machu Picchu followed by a trip to Lake Titicaca!

The Sacred Valley is vast and stretches for miles with many small indigenous towns, secluded weaving villages, outdoor handicraft markets and ancient Inca Ruins including Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Urubamba. Visiting the Salt Mine with thousands of ponds carved into the mountainside and the terraces of Moray, which are built in the form of an amphitheater and have different temperatures at each level to grow different crops. They were watered through a complex irrigation system and allowed the Incas to grow over 250 types of vegetables. Explore interesting ruins and the world famous Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu, which lies at the feet of the Huayna Picchu Mountain.

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and where civilization began according to ancient Andean beliefs. It is a stunning sight with its deep blue water that stretches across the High Plains of Puno, under the light blue sky at an elevation of 3,800mt/12,470ft. You will also visit the islands and get to know the indigenous inhabitants who still hold onto their traditional beliefs and lifestyles.

  • DAY 1: CUSCO  CITY TOUR

In the afternoon, tour the Imperial City of Cusco, a living museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a mix of Andean and Spanish cultures. The Cusco Cathedral will be the first stop, completed in 1560 after nearly 100 years of construction. Next, visit Qorikancha, the ancient Inca Palace and main worship center of the Sun Inti, which was once filled with gold until looted during the conquest. Continue to the archeological site of Sacsayhuaman. Once a military compound for the Inca, this architectural marvel made from 100-ton boulders. Finally, explore the archeological sites of Qenqo, PukaPukara, and Tambomachay before heading back to your hotel in Cusco by the early evening.

    • 3* Accommodation: Waman Qorikancha or Maytaq Wasin Hotel

DAY 2: CUSCO – SACRED VALLEY (PISAC – MORAY – SALT MINE – OLLANTAYTAMBO) – AGUAS CALIENTES

Pick up from your hotel at 7:30 am with our private van and head to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first stop is the Mirador of Taray to enjoy a beautiful overhead view of the Urubamba valley. Next, we head to the Pisac archaeological site, see the biggest Inca cemetery with more than 2,000 tombs. There we can see the hand-carved farming terraces on the side of the Mountain, explore the Inca tunnel, and the religious site of this famous Inca ruin. Here we will spend approximately 2 hours exploring the Inca city. Then, we visit the colorful Pisac Market, the largest market in the area, see some unique handicrafts before driving to Urubamba for lunch.

After lunch, visit Moray, which was an experimental farming site built in the form of an amphitheater, in which each level naturally has a different temperature to grow different types of crops. These  terraces were carved before the Incas took control of the Sacred Valley and then used by them to research optimal growing conditions for their crops.

We continue our journey to the colonial town of Maras, walking downhill to the pre-Inca salt mines. Over three thousand salt ponds have been used for salt extraction since before Inca times. A hot spring at the top of the valley runs a stream of salt water into salt ponds to produce salt. Finally, we drive to Ollantaytambo, to explore this traditional Inca village, and the Inca Ruins with your English-speaking guide.

Have time in Ollantaytambo to eat dinner or get a takeout dinner to eat on the train. Then at 7 pm, we will take the train to Aguas Calientes where we will spend the night in a hotel.

    • 2* Accommodation: Intipunku Tambo or Wiracocha Inn
    • Meal: Breakfast

DAY 3: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

After an early breakfast at your hotel, get an early bus at 5:30am up to Machu Picchu just in time to witness the sunrise. It is a truly mystical site and not something you’ll want to miss! After enjoying the sunrise your guide will provide a tour of Machu Picchu, which takes around two hours. See many of the most important parts of Machu Picchu Citadel during your tour.

When you have had your fill of the incredible views of Machu Picchu, take a bus back down to Aguas Calientes. Upon arriving at Aguas Calientes lunch is waiting with numerous restaurants to choose from (lunch not included). Depending on your train departure time, there may be some time for shopping, or sightseeing.

The Expedition train will take you back to Ollantaytambo at 2:55pm or 3:20pm, following the spectacular Urubamba River. Close to Aguas Calientes, the canyon is narrow and the river has many beautiful sections of whitewater. Back at Ollantaytambo, the driver will meet you at the exit from the train station to take you back to your hotel in Cusco in our private van. You can expect to arrive at your hotel about 7:00pm.

The people living on Lake Titicaca since pre-Incan times still maintain their traditions of surviving by fishing, hunting birds, gathering eggs, and making the best use of the reeds that surround them. Arrive at the islands around 8:30 am and  interact with the local families who are proud to show off their humble homes. They will give a demonstration of how they live their lives and how they construct the floating islands. We were short on time during our trip to Peru, so we decided to do the 1-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Everything was very well organised. We were collected from our hotel and taken to the train, where our journey to the trail began. The first part of the hike was a bit challenging, but it was absolutely worth it. The views of the mountains and the surrounding nature were breathtaking. Reaching the Sun Gate and seeing Machu Picchu for the first time was incredible. After the tour, we were taken back by train and dropped off at our hotel. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone visiting Peru, especially if you're short on time but still want to experience the Inca Trail. I also highly recommend our guide, Antonio. He was brilliant, incredibly knowledgeable, and shared so much interesting information about Machu Picchu, its history, and the local flora throughout the trek. He also allowed us to take breaks whenever we needed them.

We had an amazing time with Henry our guide on our trek to Rainbow Mountian. With an early pick we left Cusco for the long car ride to Rainbow mountain with a quick stop for breakfast. When we got there Henry helped us reserve horses (highly recommend) and we started towards the mountain. The terrain, snow capped mountains and sediment settlement are a treat to see but it is worth the 10 extra minutes to the top. Because we had the horses we were able to take a long time at the top to take in all of the beautiful wonders. Henry allowed us time to explore and gave us wonderful information about how this beautiful wonder was formed. We definitely got more than our money's worth out of this gem!

Following a great 2-day Inca Trail experience with SAM Travel, I signed up for the one-day Rainbow Mountain + Red Valley trek. Once again our group was small, just 4 people. Junior was our guide - he was friendly and knowledgeable. He seamlessly adjusted to our request for an earlier start time to beat the crowds, and also managed varying group member speeds / fitness levels well. Another positive experience with SAM Travel - highly recommend booking with them, especially if you are a solo traveler.

Rainbow mountain hike provided for gorgeous views, bunch of alpaca. At up to 5000 meters it provided for a healthy challenge even if the profile does not look that impressive…. Our guide - Cesar Siccos - was with us the whole way and provided the necessary support to get over the challenge. Great day out.
