Orange Nation Peru offers outstanding and unique opportunities. A combination of off-the-beaten track experiences with different choices for The Lares Trek. We have created independent travel experiences catering for the free spirited hikers with a passion for exploration. Start in the quaint town of Lares, 40 miles north of Cusco and 35 miles southeast of Machu Picchu. The trek itself lies awaiting your call in the legendary Lares Valley. The valley is east of the Urubamba mountain range, and part of the Sacred Valley.
The hike can be completed as a 2 or 3 day trek. Or to compliment your thirst for adventure it can connect with the epic Machu Picchu via Ollantaytambo with an extension by 1 to 2 days.
An alternative to the Inca trail, the Lares trek is arguably easier and quieter for those who love the intense remoteness and isolation. A less heavily trodden unfamiliar and uncertain trail trapezing over 3 high altitude passes.
There are five common Lares trekking route itineraries to Machu Picchu. Each offering an a la carte menu of regional tastes by various companies. Orange Nation Peru’s route is the best of all of them. That is “off the beaten path,” (no crowds), the most scenic views of lakes, mountains & valleys etc. It visits the more isolated indigenous communities and best of all it ends at the Lares Hot Springs. Recently, we have included the Pisac Ruins in the early morning when it is not crowed. Choose from 3 or 4 days to Machu Picchu or 5 days that includes the Short Inca Trail. Below we have included the 5 Day itinerary.
As of 2024 permits are not required for the Lares Trek. That means with a little organization of train tickets to Aguas Calientes and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu. Orange Nation Peru can help you experience both the beautiful Lares Trek and also Machu Picchu.
Everything you need to know before your adventure begins.
Understanding what the Lares Trek is like will help you prepare properly and determine whether this adventure is the right choice for you.
Breathtaking Mountain Scenery
The Lares Trek takes you through some of the most impressive landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. Along the trail, you’ll encounter snow-capped peaks, peaceful lagoons, rivers, and cascading waterfalls surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.
Abundant Wildlife and Andean Nature
The route offers many opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the Andes. Keep an eye out for alpacas, llamas, sheep, and the diverse plant life found throughout the region.
An Authentic Andean Experience
One of the highlights of the Lares Trek is the opportunity to encounter traditional Andean communities. Along the way, you can observe local families going about their daily lives, working the land, and preserving traditional textile-making techniques passed down through generations.
A Physically Demanding Experience
Although you can hike at your own pace, trekking for several hours each day at high altitude can be physically demanding. Even experienced hikers may feel tired by the end of the day. Maintaining a steady pace, taking regular breaks, and drinking enough water will help you manage the effort.
An Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure
The Lares Trek offers a more remote experience away from the busiest tourist routes. You’ll travel through quiet mountain landscapes and rural areas, making it an excellent choice for those looking for a genuine Andean adventure.
Clear Andean Night Skies
After sunset, the high-altitude Andes often offer remarkably clear skies filled with stars. It’s the perfect setting to relax after a day of hiking, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and discover more about the astronomical knowledge of the Incas.
Lares is a district located in the Calca Province of the Cusco region in southern Peru. Surrounded by spectacular Andean scenery, the area is known for its traditional communities, natural landscapes, hot springs, and trekking routes.
The Lares Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek. Although it may be less demanding than some of the other trekking routes to Machu Picchu, you should still be prepared for physically challenging sections along the way.
The trail includes uneven and rugged terrain, steep sections, and high-altitude hiking. The terrain can put additional strain on your knees and ankles, while the altitude may cause shortness of breath and increased fatigue, especially if you have not acclimatized properly.
Packing the right equipment and clothing is essential for a comfortable trek. Because weather conditions can change quickly in the Andes, we recommend bringing layers and the following essentials:
A little preparation can make your trekking experience much more enjoyable. Keep the following recommendations in mind before setting out on the Lares Trail:
To help you enjoy a smooth and worry-free adventure, our team recommends keeping the following points in mind when planning your Lares Trek.
Book Ahead
Although the Lares Trek generally does not have the same permit limitations as the Inca Trail, we still recommend arranging your trek in advance. Waiting until you arrive in Cusco to book at the last minute may limit your options, particularly if guides or other services are already fully booked.
Bring the Right Gear
A well-prepared packing list is essential when trekking through remote areas of the Andes. Make sure you have suitable clothing, footwear, rain protection, and all the personal items you may need throughout the journey.
Consider Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend having travel insurance that provides coverage during your trip to Peru. Having appropriate coverage can give you peace of mind in case you require medical attention or unexpected assistance during your travels.
Choose the Right Season
Consider the weather conditions when deciding when to visit Cusco and hike the Lares Trail. The dry season from May to October generally offers sunnier conditions but also attracts more visitors. The rainy season from November to April is quieter, although rainfall is more frequent.
Allow Time to Acclimatize
High altitude is one of the main challenges of the Lares Trek. Give your body enough time to adjust before starting the hike, stay well hydrated, maintain a steady pace, and pay attention to how you feel throughout the journey.
