The travel time from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain depends on the access route you take. There are two main routes:
Rainbow Mountain is located at a very high elevation, so proper preparation is important for a safe and enjoyable experience. We recommend following these guidelines:
Since the excursion takes place in a cold, high-altitude environment, it is important to pack appropriately. Make sure you have the following essentials:
The Rainbow Mountain hike is considered challenging. Although much of the trail is in reasonable condition, the final section involves a steep ascent that takes you above 5,000 meters (17,000 feet) above sea level.
Hiking at this elevation can be demanding because there is less oxygen in the air. As you climb higher, you may notice increased breathing difficulty and fatigue, particularly if your body has not had enough time to adjust to the altitude.
For a more enjoyable experience, we recommend being in good physical condition and spending at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the excursion. Proper acclimatization can help reduce the likelihood of experiencing symptoms associated with altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
If the hike becomes too demanding, there is also the option of renting a horse to assist with the ascent. The approximate cost is S/. 50.00 soles one way or S/. 90.00 soles round trip.
The route to Rainbow Mountain crosses some of the highest ecological zones in Peru, including the Puna and Janca. Due to the extreme altitude and harsh conditions, very few species are able to live permanently in these areas.
Among the vegetation you may encounter is ichu, a native Andean grass that serves as an important food source for alpacas, llamas, and vicuñas.
Birdlife can also be spotted along the route. You may see kestrels flying over the mountains, and with some luck, you could even catch sight of an impressive Andean condor soaring above the valleys.
